Starting a new career

I survived my first day of training at Luce Research. The trainer went over the procedures for conducting telephone surveys, the dress code and other aspects of the business before taking the new employees into a phone bank room to practice our skills, then answer real calls. I mostly got people's answering machines since this was during the afternoon. I had a few wrong numbers and a few people who weren't interested in participating. I got to the second question on one caller before she changed her mind and hung up. The trainer was very positive and helped motivate those who weren't having much luck. It's much more nurturing than the telemarketing job I had last year (for 2 days) where people got fired for not making a certain number of sales by a certain time.

The company offers flexible hours for everyone, which is nice. Unfortunately for me, new hires are required to work Saturdays from 9-5 for six weeks. I hope I'm able to find a substitute at KRCC every Saturday during that time. I couldn't switch shifts with the morning board operator because that shift ends at 9 AM. The only positive part of this is I'd have an extra two hours to sleep before my KRCC Sunday morning shift.

The weekday shifts are from 3-10 PM, while Sundays are from noon-8. I don't know if I'll be assigned the entire shift each day or just part of it. If I have to work the entire shift, I'd only be able to work Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. My Overeaters Anonymous meetings would prevent me from working Monday nights, and I have dinner with my parents and grandmother every Friday. If morning/early-afternoon shifts are added to the weekdays, I could do Mondays and Tuesdays.

As I've said before, it's tough finding a balance between making a living and having a life. With this schedule, I'm settling for catching the recordings of certain furry shows instead of watching them live and being in the chat room. At least for the moment, I'll be getting a second paycheck. Over the next two to three weeks, I'll make enough to pay my remaining expenses for Furry Fiesta. I've never had such mixed emotions about a job before, but the good outweighs the bad.
