42 days until Rocky Mountain Fur Con, and 110 days until Oklacon (pending funding from a new j0b.)
Just before going to bed last night, I wrote a long, rambling bit about my current furniture and the furniture I'd like to get. This came to mind while thinking about the new IKEA store in Denver which is opening later this month. I know I've mentioned some of this crap on here before. I just wrote until I got tired, which is why there's no ending.
At the moment, if I were to invite friends or co-workers to my condo for a get-together, I would only have enough seating for three of them. Well, five if I would make the effort to clear off the other two sections of my couch. If a sixth guest showed up, I could bring out my desk chair from my bedroom. However, a seventh guest would have to settle for the stationary bicycle.
I continually have two types of daydreams about my living arrangements: being able to buy more furniture once I can afford it, and moving into my dream house.
My sofa was actually my parents' family room sofa bought sometime in the 1990s. It's a reclining sofa, where the two end cushions recline by pulling a handle and whoever is sitting on the middle cushion is shit out of luck. When my mom became bedridden in 2006 and a hospital bed was wheeled into the family room for her, the sofa joined the newer sofa-bed in the living room for over a year. Since the sofa joined my humble abode the following December, the reclining mechanism on one side has broken. It now reclines on its own without needing to use the handle. Two CD packages currently hold this section in its upright and locked position.
I now "recline" on the middle cushion by putting my feet up on the plastic storage trunk which serves as a coffee table, desk and dining room table. The single counter dining space in the kitchen is mostly covered with old mail, magazines, coupons and other items.
Getting back to the sofa: I'd like to eventually replace it with a sofa-bed in case a friend or relative needs a place to crash for the night. I'd also like to get a real coffee table and two end tables with drawers so I could store some of the non-trash items currently taking up floor space.
One of my friends who recently held a get-together has a home which resembles how I picture my dream home. It's small enough for one person to take care of, but big enough to host a small gathering. It's set back from the road on a one-acre forested lot with a long driveway and ample parking. Despite being about two blocks away from a busy major city thoroughfare, the trees, foliage and crickets help silence most of the traffic noise.
