Avis...We (Don't) Try Harder
Oct. 25th, 2010 04:18 pmMy laptop is the only computer that hasn't betrayed me today!
I dropped my car off at the repair shop today. An employee from Avis Rent-A-Car picked me up and drove me to one of their offices. I was told on the phone that I could pay for a rental car by check (the main reason I chose Avis,) but the counter clerk said a credit card authorization for $250 was required to actually reserve the car. My card wasn't over the limit and it has over-the-limit protection, but the authorization amount was still declined. The company couldn't accept cash either. That's a shame since I could have gone next door to the credit union and made an ATM withdrawal.
I left and called Enterprise to see if they had lower rates, which they did. A representative picked me up and drove me to their Chapel Hills office. My card was also declined there.
I had a therapist's appointment at 2 PM. The Enterprise representative offered to drive me to the doctor's office, even though it was only noon. I originally planned to take a taxi home since it was too cold and a bit too far for me to walk, but the therapist gave me a ride home.
I'm currently on hold with the Department of Labor to find out why my unemployment payment for last week hasn't been deposited. The automated system said the payment was declined due to some type of disqualification. It took 30 minutes of dialing and re-dialing to get an open line.
It looks like I won't make tonight's Overeaters Anonymous meeting. I believe the city bus has routes that could take me to work. I'll look up the map and schedules today.
After going through all this today, I will definitely have to forgo attending Further Confusion this year. Paying off my credit card debt in case of an emergency like this is much more important. My car should be repaired by Friday.
P.S. To the Avis employee who drove me to the office: If you're going to fart in the car, please roll the window down right away, not two minutes later.
