Dream come true...or Sunday nightmare?
Jun. 1st, 2010 01:47 pmI saw a customer service job listing for Progressive Insurance on the Connecting Colorado Web site (run by the state Department of Labor.) The job is full-time, pays very well ($13-14 per hour) and it doesn't overlap my KRCC weekend work schedule. In addition, I'd work four 10-hour days per week instead of five or six regular days.
There's only two very minor problems for me: the Sunday shift begins at 9:30 AM, 30 minutes after my KRCC shift ends. This means I could no longer fill in for the person after me if she's unable to come in. Also, I tend to not get much sleep on Saturday nights due to my 2-8 PM shift then, so I'd basically have a 14.5-hour workday with only 3-5 hours of sleep beforehand. If Progressive hires me, I'll see if the Saturday morning KRCC board operator (who traded shifts with me two years ago) would like to switch back. Finally, the Friday shift would prevent me from attending Friday's Toastmasters meetings. I'd need to find a Toastmasters club which meets during my non-work time.
Still, the positives outweigh the negatives. I'd be able to build up my account balances again, resume paying condo rent to my dad and pay off my credit card debt a bit faster. If/when I qualify for health coverage, I could cancel my not-real-insurance discount plan. Above all, I wouldn't have to worry about whether my unemployment pay is about to run out.
