Rocky Mountain Fur Con 2011 review
Aug. 15th, 2011 09:24 pmAnother great con!
The drive up to Denver lasted just under 90 minutes. There were just a couple of slow-downs in the Tech Center. When I tried to check in, I couldn't remember Growly's RL name, so I had to call his cell phone. He came down to the lobby to verify everything and get me a key card. This is the first time I stayed in another fur's hotel room. When Growly said he had filled the hotel room, I didn't realize he meant it literally! The room had seven furs, including myself, Growly, Machozi, Kspar, Zachary and Mar the gryphon.
FRIDAY
In the registration line, I looked at the registration document I had printed out and discovered I had printed out last year's confirmation. Thanks to the miracle of computers, they had my information and registered me quickly. I got badge number 34, as in the rule! I forgot to pick up my T-shirt and other gifts at registration. Growly (who volunteered with the RMFC staff) said the T-shirts and bandanas had run out, but later found there was one 3XL shirt remaining, which happens to be my size! I picked up the T-shirt and super sponsor print (the last one) on Sunday morning.
SATURDAY
I started the day with some banana bread French toast at the hotel restaurant. I got a halfway decent spot in the photo after the fursuit parade. Growly said a con-approved reporter from Westword, an independent weekly newspaper in Denver, had interviewed him for an article on RMFC. Their website had dozens of photos taken during the first day and a half, including the fursuit photo. The presence of my kigurumi among the dozens of fursuits was noted in the caption "One of these things is not like the others." The Westword RMFC slideshow is here! (The fursuit photo shoot is slide number 3, right after the picture of Growly.)
After the parade, I attended the Furry Password game and got to participate in a couple of best-of-three rounds. My game partner and I won the first round but lost the second one. There were Japanese-made prizes offered; I got a mini puzzle and a bunny costume nose.
I grabbed lunch at Sonic, hoping to get the grilled chicken salad as I did last year. I found out Sonic no longer has salads on its menu. When I ate lunch there on Sunday, another fur told me he loved my tail as he left. I had just taken a bite of food, so I couldn't verbally thank him. As I started to walk back to the hotel, I heard a "love the tail!" coming from one of Sonic's menu intercoms in the parking area.
Housekeeping hadn't cleaned our hotel room on Friday and hadn't shown up Saturday morning. I finally called them at 2:40. A housekeeper came by around 3:00 to straighten up the beds and replace the soiled towels/washcloths. I had to call them again on Sunday to get new bedsheets after one of the roommates kept the rest of us out for more than an hour so he and another fur could fool around (and not clean up after themselves.)
My registration included admission to the Friday Cocktail Party and Saturday Guest of Honor Dinner. At the dinner, I sat across the table from Growly and next to FreeFox. I had a salad, tequila-grilled chicken and chocolate cake.
SUNDAY
I couldn't find my ticket to the ice cream social. I don't know if I accidentally threw it out or it wasn't put in my bag. When I asked if I could buy a ticket, I was told all the tickets had been sold. A couple seconds later, someone else came up to me and gave me his ticket, which was sweet. I had taken a picture of Kspar, who was eating ice cream while wearing his suit. I thought he had gotten whipped cream on his nose, but it was just the light reflecting off of it.
RMFC's cooking demonstration "Free Can Cook" was canceled due to an emergency. An improv comedy show was put together at the last minute to take its place.
For dinner, I went to Panda Express with Growly, Kspar and Palmer Husky. Growly's stomach started bothering him due to eating too fast. He began to feel better later, then Kspar, Mar, Palmer and I went to the Sunday night dance.
We checked out of the room a few minutes after noon Monday then had breakfast/brunch at IHOP.
Even though sharing a room meant less privacy, I had a ball this year and did much more than I likely would have with a room to myself. These conventions truly keep me feeling young!
As for my snoring concern, there were a few other snorers in the room, so I didn't feel so bad.
