Rant, sorry

jcollie719I apologize for this in advance. I rarely talk about political matters, but I was so upset by one of my Facebook "friends" I just have to vent.
Dear (now former) Facebook friend:
I am deeply offended that you are using the American flag as a symbol of your opposition to the proposed mosque/community center near Ground Zero (not "at Ground Zero" as you falsely claim.) Most, if not all, of the people who would use this facility are Americans as well. As President Obama said, they have as much right as any American of any religion to open the center.
Just because a group of killers belonged to the Muslim religion doesn't mean every Muslim is a killer or supports the killing. The religion itself did not kill thousands of people on September 11, 2001 (some of them Muslims as well.) A small number of people claiming to be Christians protest, shoot and even blow up the clinics of doctors who perform abortions. That does not make all Christians killers. The 9/11 attacks and abortion center bombings were fueled by the same thing: religious fervor, people claiming they were doing God/Allah's work by killing those who were considered "evil." That doesn't mean everyone belonging to the religion thinks that way.
An American flag is not a magic wand. Waving it while preaching hate does not make the hate disappear. I support your right to speak your opinion, but I also have the right to "change the channel" if I don't like what I'm watching. Therefore, I have removed you as a Facebook friend so my wall won't be littered with your hate.
