Re-discovering old tunes

I remembered the SNL sketch Ricochet had mentioned about the band that sang "We just wanna sell records." I looked it up and found it was from the season 9 episode hosted by Michael Douglas. I found the sketch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-rAoY9aSYQ

One of the podcasts I listened to this weekend played the song "Bark, Battle and Ball" by The Platters. It made me think of Boomer because of "bark" and "ball" in the title! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0FltFs5i-k

The podcast also highlighted some dirty/suggestive songs like "Jellyroll," "Big Ten-Inch Record" and "Nosey Joe."

Kicking into vacation mode

I found a Saturday Night Live sketch that had eluded me two years ago. The season 12 episode hosted by Joe Montana and Walter Payton started with a parody of the "Super Bowl Shuffle" called "We Are the Kickers." This sketch and others were cut out of the episode on the streaming services I browsed. I was able to find the complete episode today on the Internet Archive.

I'm almost halfway packed for the trip to Furry Fiesta. I need to pick up a few more items today.

Making the dive into a K hole?

Over the weekend, I got a box of Bisquick mix, plus milk and eggs, to make some of the pies from my Bisquick cookbook. I made a turkey taco pie last night. It was supposed to be a chicken taco pie, but I only had turkey.

An online talk show I like played some audio of the host undergoing ketamine therapy. This is one of the therapies I'm considering trying to cure my depression. The only other reference to ketamine I'm familiar with is the episode of That's My Bush! where George W. Bush accidentally takes ketamine and Marcia Wallace's character spins around saying "I'm in a K hole!"

Random so-called humor

Just some random jokes I thought of:

"I went to Raising Cane's for lunch the other day. I got the 3-Finger Combo ... and I also got some chicken."

"I've been practicing to become a contestant on The Price Is Right. Every morning, I step on my bathroom scale and shout 'Lower! Lower!'"

Practicing my "ding ding wacky"

I mixed a few comedy sound bites into a pair of songs.

My Vocational Rehab counselor sent me a few forms to fill out to explore self-employment. Seeing the forms made me realize why I had given up on the idea before. I didn't know the answers to some of the questions. I hope I can at least find help with the forms this time.

I saw that the LPFM station where a furry has a music show needs to go off the air temporarily. KHUH-LP in Seattle needs to move its antenna to a new location. The station is still streaming online, though.

You're so "very" special

After hearing Romeo play the radio-friendly version of Radiohead's "Creep" last weekend, I was reminded of when I played the then-brand-new song uncensored on KEPC. Until recently, I didn't know the radio-friendly version was available on the CD itself because it was an unlisted track.

When I was at KEPC in the early-'90s, the station played the album versions of songs, even those with cursing. I remember asking the station manager about it, and he said not to worry because KEPC's audience was fairly small. Back then, the Birch ratings (Arbitron's competitor, which included non-commercial stations) said KEPC didn't even have enough listeners for a 0.1 rating. Today, KXRE -- which replaced KEPC as the station at the newly renamed Pikes Peak State College -- at least has enough in the Nielsen ratings for a 0.2.

Long live the Queen of Candy-pants

As you can probably tell from the lack of entries, this has been a really uneventful week.

"Hey, piiiigs! Let's parrrrtyyyy!"

I was a little sad last night because I read that comedian Judy Tenuta died of ovarian cancer. Having her death so close to Coolio's death reminded me that both celebrities had appeared on the 1998 version of "Match Game." On one episode, Coolio gave a multiple card answer à la Brett Somers by saying "My Johnson, my wiener, my third leg."

I have some eggs in my fridge that are just a few days past the sell-by date. I tested four of them to make sure they were still good, then made a Southwestern frittata with tomatoes, onions and bell peppers.

Wanting to break the non-existing format

I was getting tired and feeling alone near the end of my latest show. I briefly considered dumping my planned songs and just playing a bunch of silly songs and comedy bits.

I got tongue-tied trying to say "Megaplex membership" during the furry news segment.

Assault with what?

Photobucket wouldn't let me embed this video, so I uploaded it to my Google Drive. It's a mashup of video from "The Bad Guys" and audio from a similar scene in "The Naked Gun."

I was reminded of the Naked Gun scene after hearing Governor Diane Foxington say "Assault with a deadly reptile."

Sketch kicked from the internet

I was hoping to find a particular Saturday Night Live sketch from the mid-'80s online, but it's not out there (for free, anyway!) Since the "Super Bowl Shuffle" was mentioned previously, I wanted to find the "We Are the Kickers" parody from January 1987. The episode itself (hosted by Walter Payton and Joe Montana) is on Peacock, but this sketch and others were cut from the streaming version.

A Denver car dealer had done its own "Shuffle" parodies for its commercials around that time, but I don't feel like going through dozens of VHS tapes to find them.

Quips from classic shows

Romeo held a spontaneous Quiplash night on Twitch. I used a David Letterman and a Johnny Carson reference in two of my answers.

For the prompt "What Bigfoot talks about with his therapist," I said that Bigfoot "doesn't have a powerful stench." This was from a David Letterman monologue joke I remembered from around 1987.

For the prompt "A good catchphrase to say after taking the biggest dump of your life," I went with "El Mouldo has done it again!" El Mouldo was a Johnny Carson character who was a hack magician.

Milking favor

During dinner yesterday, I saw an older "Rhymes With Orange" comic strip featuring cows. One of the cows was holding a pitcher of milk and a plate of cookies. One of the other cows looks at her and says "Are you trying to one-up us?" This comic reminded me of one of the "zingers" Paul Lynde made on Hollywood Squares:

Peter Marshall: What are "dual purpose" cattle good for that other cattle aren't?
Paul Lynde: They give milk and cookies...but I don't recommend the cookies!

I was planning to go to a furry party tonight, but I don't really feel like going out. I'll listen to BigBlueFox's stream and take part in Steelwoulfe's game night instead.

R.I.P. Bob Saget

I ordered four more APAP masks since I'm about to run out. These will last me until mid-May

When I moved into my condo in late-2007, the cable/phone/internet bundle I originally signed up for included three free months of HBO, Showtime and Starz. One of the comedy specials I got to see during that time was Bob Saget's "That Ain't Right." After years of seeing squeaky-clean Bob on Full House and other network TV shows, it was a hilarious surprise to hear a blue streak flow from Bob's mouth. Rest In Peace.

The Rabbit Returns!

Romeo will be back with the Rabbit Hole this weekend! I appreciate the work he's done over the past decade.

A listener had suggested I do a podcast similar to Radiolawn. Unfortunately, pretty much all of my radio airchecks are boring straightforward announcing with only an occasional funny comment. If I did a podcast, I don't know how much of it should be music, comedy clips, skits or general chatter.

I've registered for Furry Fiesta (162 days away!) I tried to book a hotel room with my debit card yesterday, but it expires three months before the convention. I successfully got a room today using a credit card. The room has two queen beds, so I'll see if any friends wanted to share it with me.

Outdoor testing

I planned to test my SDR's antenna and just-arrived upconverter by putting it outside on my porch window using a suction cup mount. Sadly, the suction didn't hold. I still had slightly better reception with the antenna resting on the porch. I can now pick up seven AM stations clearly, plus two more with weaker signals.

Hearing Boomer and Ricochet mention Dick's Sporting Goods at a mall reminded me of a comedy ad from the Rock Comedy Network for a department store called Scrotum's. As the jingle said, it's "right below Dick's at the mall."

Another loss for the furry fandom

The furry fandom lost another great this week: Draconis, also known as Jugular Jaguar and Calamity Cougar. Draconis' housemate Keefur announced Draconis suffered a massive stroke late Friday night and died early Saturday at age 61. I never got to meet him up close, but I saw him at Furry Fiesta when I first attended in 2010. As Calamity, he also appeared on Rhubarb the Bear's song "I'm Leaving the Fandom."

Calamity and Rhubarb had a mock feud for years at Mephit Fur Meet. Here's a video (only viewable on YouTube) of the two having an "Epic Rap Battle," with a surprise appearance by another furry musician!

Firmer grip on my phone

I bought a replacement for my car vent-mounted cell phone holder. I had accidentally thrown out a piece of my old one that I didn't think I'd need, but the holder kept flopping around without that part. I couldn't remember which company made the holder, and it didn't have a brand name or model number printed on it. I found the exact model at a store; the maker is called "Just Wireless." I'll keep the old holder as a backup just in case. I also got a digital thermometer to check for any fever after the second COVID shot later this month.

I had mainly been eating junk for the past two days, so I got lunch at Panera Bread later. I ordered a tuna sandwich and ten-vegetable soup.

One of two used CDs I ordered arrived in the mail today. I found an online listing for the "Oliver and Company" soundtrack that was reasonably priced. The other listings were asking for hundreds of dollars. I also ordered a copy of "The Best of Neil Rogers 1995." Rogers was a Miami talk show host whose CDs contained both original and syndicated comedy bits. I listen to an online show hosted by one of his parody writers, Boca Brittany Somers.

Snowed in

I wanted to make some GrubHub deliveries tonight, but the roads are really bad. I had almost crashed once yesterday, and I don't want to risk that again.

RIP Larry King. Kevin Pollak's Chat Show had a "Larry King Game" segment where guests impersonated King. Some guests did a straightforward King impression, while others had King giving dirty anecdotes, sort of like the classic "Aristocrats" joke.

Back at KEPC in the early-'90s, I didn't think my real name sounded very good for radio, so I went by "Tom Victor" on the air there.

Rabbit wrap-up

It's just past 11:30 PM and I'm brewing a pot of coffee. The Rabbit Hole is wrapping up its weeklong donation drive with a 24-hour stream that started Friday morning. I had slept in quite a bit, so I should be awake for the rest of the show.

I found a CD of sound bites I had compiled decades ago. Most of the clips are from David Letterman and shows on Comedy Central. Since the track listing on the cover started at track 20, I listened to see what tracks 1-19 were and found several air breaks and segments from my days at KEPC and Business Talk Radio.

Another round of "Name That Tune"

I was trying to remember the artist and title of a song I had played years ago at KEPC. One of my old airchecks only had Damon Wayans' standup bit about slam dancing at the very end of the track and I forgot to announce what the song was. Earlier today, I searched online using Wayans' dialogue. I first found the standup act it was from (talking about a Fishbone concert,) and one of the comments said it was sampled by Fishbone in their song "Swim."

Speaking of "Name That Tune," I read earlier that game show host Tom Kennedy died last week. Rest In Peace!
