I got home from my vacation in Grenada last night. I felt like I had either a cold or bad allergy when I woke up today, but taking a Zyrtec and drinking lots of water seems to be reducing it.

I just weighed myself and found I gained about 15 pounds during the cruise. I didn't eat a lot of junk food during the cruise since this was a small working ship instead of a large cruise ship with lots of food options. I was hoping I had lost weight since a red shirt which had been a little tight on me fit comfortably during the trip.

FRIDAY, JULY 1
A woman from Pueblo going on the same vacation said hello to me at the Colorado Springs airport. Our assigned seats were across the aisle from each other during all three flights. While waiting for the first flight, we saw another passenger with a small dog named Bashful, though it sure didn't seem bashful! I had a breakfast quesadilla during the first layover in Dallas. When the second plane landed in Miami, it had to wait on the tarmac about 30 minutes since a plane with mechanical problems was stuck at the gate our plane was supposed to use. Another gate was found, and my cruise friend and I took a cart to the connecting gate. We landed in Grenada on time, but my friend and I discovered our suitcases were still in Miami.

The cruise group stayed at the Flamboyant Hotel. The hotel itself is spread out with dozens of buildings, and getting from one place to another requires taking flights of steep steps outside. The group met for dinner and drinks at the hotel's Owl Sports Bar.

The rest of the trip... )

RANDOM THOUGHTS DURING MY VACATION

I forgot to pack my name necklace for the singles cruise. The cruise director made me a new one. He had to make one with my last name since he didn't have an O to spell John.

If I do a trip like this again, remember to pack laundry soap and a change of clothes in my carry-on.

The streets on many of the islands remind me of San Francisco. Any unemployed mechanics could move to this area and make a good living repairing brakes and transmissions.

Each of the ship's cabins has an en-suite bathroom about the size of a walk-in closet. I could never get hot water through the sink or shower. Also the floor in the rest of the cabin is tile. "People are going to be stepping out of the shower with wet feet on a boat that's rocking. Let's put down slick tile for them. Not just any tile, but dark blue tile that won't reflect any light in the cabin."

The island tours were okay, but being in the back of a truck with occasional breezes is not the same as being in an air-conditioned vehicle.

PSA: If an out-of-shape person asks how far away something is, either give an estimate or say you don't know. An out-of-shape person's idea of "not very far" is a much shorter distance than someone in shape.

I had a slightly bothersome ear infection before and during the trip. Also, my hemorrhoids began bugging me halfway through the trip.

When asking myself if I wanted to do this cruise again, I thought I would only do it if it were a private charter like this trip was. Also, I'd definitely work harder to lose much more weight before then.

I went to another singles meetup yesterday. It was held at Old Chicago (the same location where I had dinner after last weekend's bowling meet.) This time, I had a cheeseburger with vegetables as a side dish. During the meetup, a member invited me to a Cinco de Mayo dinner celebration tonight at a Mexican restaurant.

I got a schedule of some of the activities during my upcoming singles cruise (56 days away!) Much of the schedule will vary depending upon which ports we visit, but the meals and some activities are at set times. Since I have a follow-up appointment with my eye doctor later this month, I may either get some prescription sunglasses or regular glasses with photo-gray lenses.

Whoops!

I was listening to podcasts through headphones Tuesday afternoon. Because of this, I didn't hear my phone alarm reminding me about a KRCC staff meeting. I signed up for a few phone shifts long ago. I'll see if any need to be filled when I go to work Saturday.

I've been sleeping in more this week. Tonight, I'll take off my heavier blankets and turn down the thermostat a few degrees.

Just 84 days until my singles cruise! I've been looking over past entries with the "cruise planning" tag to see what else I should pack for the trip. On the advice of other cruisers, I'm saving several $1 and $5 bills since many places in Grenada and SVG accept U.S. currency but prefer smaller denominations. One bit of planning I need to do is to test my underwater camera case to make sure it doesn't leak. I haven't used it in years!
jcollie719: (Collie Wink)
Today marks 100 days until the cruise, and 141 days until RMFC!

Before the cruise, I need to get a new battery for my HP Photosmart R817 camera. I'd hate to have the battery die while I'm on one of the islands. The ship cabins have AC outlets, but I'm sharing a cabin with someone and don't want to constantly hog the outlet(s). I'm both excited and nervous about not having to go by a schedule on this trip.

Tomorrow Thursday, I need to get the haircut I've been putting off for about three weeks.

It's hard to believe I was in Florida just 12 hours ago. There were a couple of weather-related delays on the trip home. I was supposed to arrive back at DIA at 11:15 PM, but I got in around 1 AM.

Saturday: EPCOT at Disney World
The wait time for the Soarin' ride was 120 minutes, so the group decided to skip it. I had been on the Soarin' ride at California Adventure back in 2001. Instead, we saw the "Circle Of Life" film featuring Timon, Pumbaa and Simba from "The Lion King."
Briefly walked through the "countries" before stopping in the Mexico section for lunch. After lunch, the group went back and spent more time in the other country sections.
We ended the EPCOT trip on the "World of Tomorrow" ride inside the huge disco ball at the entrance. I got a video postcard of the trip sent to my e-mail. Unlike Universal, there were more rides I could actually ride.

Saturday's dinner was at Dick's Last Resort. This chain of restaurants features intentionally rude/obnoxious staff who put bibs and paper hats on the customers, then write insults on each hat. My hat had "My mommy still dresses me." Some of the group previously said they didn't plan to go to Dick's due to the "crappy food and attitude." I liked the food, and the "attitude" is about the same as attending a Don Rickles show or Friars Club roast (It's all in fun.) I had ordered a 45-ounce margarita with my chicken fried chicken, only drinking from one of the two straws in case I needed help finishing it. Either my alcohol tolerance is stronger, the amount of ice in the drink watered it down or my food soaked up most of the alcohol. I got to keep the glass as a souvenir (More like a trophy!)

The group held a pajama party Saturday night. I brought the batch of bacon chocolates I made at home. I forgot to label them or tell anyone what they were (I had put them in a Whitman's box,) so not many people tried them.

The group had breakfast at Denny's on Sunday, then people with later flights brought their luggage into the room of a group member who was staying an extra day so we could hang out at the pool.

There were a few notes I made on planning and packing for future reunions:
* Individually list medications I need to pack. I forgot to pack Zyrtec and acid reflux pills.
* Budget $15-20 for each breakfast, $30-40 for lunch and $40-50 for dinner.
* Ask others about possible rides to/from the airport before booking an airport shuttle.
* Get weight below 250 lbs. and waist below 48 inches to fit in more amusement park rides and airplane seats.
* Factor an extra $50 into room price when splitting cost between roommates.
* For Orlando trips, plan to stay until Monday to visit FPS.

I will definitely wait until I can really afford it before going on another trip like this.

A few hours ago, I heard the beeping of a truck backing up on the street near my condo. When I looked out the kitchen window, I was startled because I thought my car was being loaded onto a tow truck. Thankfully it was just another car that looks a bit like mine. I went to the living room window and was relieved to see my car still parked in its space.

I think my left ear is infected again. All day, it's been "popping" the way it did the last time this happened. It's not popping as often now, so I hope it's healing.

I was invited to a Singles Cruise reunion in Orlando in June. After having to cancel a Vegas reunion trip years ago, it will be nice to see my cruise friends again. As with recent furry conventions, I will be sharing a room with others to save money. At least this time, I'll be in a two-bedroom villa that can comfortably fit eight people.
jcollie719: (Tiger costume)
I don't know if I've lost enough weight to fit into my old tiger costume (The closest I've come to having a fursuit) again. I ordered it for my 2007 singles cruise and had it slightly altered to fit me, which it did at home. Unfortunately, I gained weight on the cruise and had to wear an orange shirt underneath it to cover up the area where the zipper in back couldn't go all the way up. I also had to tug on the front of the collar when I sat down because it was too tight.

I still have my caveman costume from the last cruise. That would actually be comfortable to wear in Vegas during the cruise reunion. Earlier today, I ordered a straw hat and plastic light-up leis which I could wear with one of my Hawaiian shirts, shorts and sandals.

I'm home for a few hours. I head back to KRCC at 2:00 to cover Ron's shift, then I'm working a double shift tomorrow.

The only Thursday flight from Colorado Springs to Las Vegas offered by Allegiant Air doesn't arrive in Vegas until 10:40 PM. I'd like to arrive earlier, so I'm considering a one-way flight on another airline. It would stop in Denver and be only $50-80 more, then I could take Allegiant's 5:30 PM Sunday flight home. Even though this isn't a cruise, I've put the "cruise planning" tag on this message since it's a cruisers' reunion.

Earlier this week, a few wasps had flown into my condo. The first one flew over to a window for a bit, then flew into one of the socket holders of my chandelier. It crawled around in there for a few hours before finally dying. Two days later, a couple more wasps flew in. They appeared to come in through the chimney (I hadn't opened my front door yet.) This time, I worked up the nerve to go after them and swat them. I was concerned about more wasps and/or a possible nest in the chimney because I hadn't used the fireplace since moving in a year and a half ago. I used it for the first time Wednesday, hopefully smoking out any remaining wasps.

I wasn't sure how to spell his name before, but the Brazilian musician I listed under "current song" two days ago is Airto (eye-AIR-toe.)

"Cruise planning" note for the Halloween cruise (if I go): Bring a raincoat/plastic shield. Remember what happened in Grand Cayman!

Tomorrow the local workforce center is holding a job fair. I've printed out 20 copies of my resume, but I ran out of resume paper about halfway through. Since I'll likely be meeting several non-radio employers, I added my credit union experience to the resume and removed the "Objective: On-air and/or board operator at a radio station" line. I still kept in all of my radio-related jobs in case some of the skills match what an employer is looking for.

"Labels, I've got labels/I've got stacks and stacks of labels...LABELLLLLLS!" It seems like every week I receive an envelope of return address labels from some charity that wants me to donate. I've given to a couple, but I can't afford to keep giving to all of them. At least that's one thing I'll never have to worry about ordering or printing out. I actually used some of the labels to cover up my old address on the contact cards I brought on last month's cruise. I still have a box of labels with my old address. I've been using those as labels for the CDs and DVDs I've been burning.
jcollie719: (Default)
I was just about to write about how I couldn't print out my resume due to my laptop being repaired. A few minutes ago, the repair shop called and said I could pick up the laptop around 4:30. They not only fixed the power connector, they removed some spyware they found and (with my permission) installed a 1GB memory stick since I was running low on memory. I believe the total cost will be in the neighborhood of $290-300.

Today was one of the rare mid-autumn days where I could walk outside without a jacket. Right now it's 65 degrees with little to no breeze. The condo community's new mailboxes were installed yesterday.

I forgot I already have a travel alarm clock, but its batteries are dead. It's one of those pesky types which use button batteries instead of regular batteries. I'll swing by the Batteries Plus store on the way to picking up my laptop, but I won't install the batteries until next year (assuming I'm going on next year's Halloween singles cruise or the furry cruise) to keep them fresher.
jcollie719: (Buster Sheep)
I need to remember to take my medication before going to the post office. The condo community's mailboxes are being replaced, so I have to pick up my mail at the post office at least until Saturday. My dad came by today to fix my bathroom's towel rack, which had been partially detached from the wall when I first moved in. I'm guessing the people who lived here before kept grabbing onto the rack as they got out of the shower.

I hoped the local university would be doing a production of David Sedaris' "The Santaland Diaries" this year, but they're not. The only audition they're listing is a drama which doesn't have any characters which match my description.

One quick note for "cruise planning": Practice the "Cha Cha Slide." It usually plays in the ship's nightclubs and on-deck parties, so it would be nice to be able to join in.
jcollie719: (Default)
I was worried that my suitcases wouldn't have enough room for the rum cakes I bought in Grand Cayman.  I also had about a fourth of a bottle of cashew wine from Belize, but I polished that off during a final night party in someone else's room last night.  The cruise directors (Shelby, Tara, Ernie, Ingrid and Page) did an excellent job, and all the cruisers were marvelous (I apologize to the few I snapped at.)  I soooooooooo want to do next year's Halloween cruise if my job situation gets better in the next few months.  The cruise will be a bit more expensive since it's an 8-night trip instead of a 7-night one, but it goes to Cozumel and two ports I've never been to before (Limon, Costa Rica and Colon, Panama.)  It's also on the fairly new Carnival Freedom, which is bigger than the ship I was just on.

I was awakened during the final night by a bad case of acid reflux.  I called the purser's desk to see if they had any Rolaids or Mylanta, which they didn't.  Room service didn't have anything helpful like seltzer water, either.

As for the trip home, I forgot to sign up for Carnival's Luggage Express program which would have automatically sent my bags to the airport.  Still, I celebrate the miracle that is airport curbside check-in.  I did a small load of laundry on the ship the night before, so I had clean underwear to wear with the second suit I brought.  I forgot to have my room steward do my laundry halfway through the trip since I couldn't find the special bags they have for it.  One note I've made for "cruise planning" is to pack one pair of underwear for each night of the trip, plus two extra.

Some more cruise planning tips:
* Find or buy a smaller and lighter case for your suits
* Bring a travel alarm and a night light (depending on the type of cabin)
* Unplug the electrical cord from the laptop computer before packing it, or find a lighter equivalent like a PDA or the camera card-to-CD writer
* Bring Rolaids

Speaking of the laptop, it's still kaput.  I'll be taking it and the cord to a shop to see exactly what's wrong and whether it can be fixed.

jcollie719: (Hot Air Balloons)
I remembered a few more items I needed for the cruise, including blank tapes for my video camera. I withdrew $260 for the trip and will change $30 to singles on Thursday.

The forecast said Monday would be sunny and Tuesday would be cold and breezy, but the opposite happened. It's a little breezy now, but 63 degrees (compared to the forecast's high of 52) isn't that cold.
jcollie719: (Default)
I bought a devil horn headpiece at Walgreens for the Halloween cruise. One of the cruise's theme nights is dressing as an angel or devil, or a combination. While browsing the same aisle, another headpiece caught my attention:

Since I was already in a drugstore, I went ahead and bought some spray-on sunscreen for the trip.
jcollie719: (Default)
Here's an update to my cruise planning/shopping list:

* Airborne anti-cold medicine Bought today!
* Corkscrew
* Wine for cabin crawl
* Dove chocolates with personalized wrappers for cabin crawl (Will buy regular Dove dark chocolates in Tampa).
* iPod speaker dock
* Spray-on sunscreen with DEET
Bought 9/23
* New suitcase to replace the one with the wheels broken off

I told my dad about the cruise Tuesday and explained I had already made the final payment long before getting news of the layoff.  Since it's less than 60 days until the cruise, I can't get a refund, so if I canceled I would basically be throwing my money away (about $1600 for the cruise and airfare.)
jcollie719: (AFA Chapel)
I ordered the wine and a corkscrew for the cruise last night. I decided to get a Merlot from the Holy Cross Abbey winery (abbeywinery.com.) The abbey closed two years ago, but the winery is still in operation. I had ordered their Chardonnay for my first two cruises, then I got a champagne from a different company last year.

RE: My last post...I decided to name my "little friend" Luigi.
jcollie719: (I Ruff You)
This year I'll have enough medications to last throughout the cruise. The last refill I currently have will run out a week or so after I get back, so I'll need to see my doctor before I leave to get more refills.

Since I've created a tag called "cruise planning," I can easily revisit notes I've made about what I need to pack, what I need to buy ahead of time and things I can buy in Florida prior to the cruise. Here are the things I thought of which I need to get either here or in Tampa:

* Airborne anti-cold medicine
* Corkscrew
* Wine for cabin crawl (the cruisers bring a bottle of wine from their home states to share with others)
* Dove chocolates with personalized wrappers for cabin crawl  I'll just buy some regular chocolates in Tampa.
* iPod speaker dock
* Spray-on sunscreen with DEET
* New suitcase to replace the one with the wheels broken off Ordered 9/6
jcollie719: (Default)
I hope I've counted this correctly: 143 days until my next cruise! If that's not right, it's only a day or two off. (EDIT: It's actually 144 days.)

I'll go for a walk in an hour or so. I forgot to do any exercise the past couple of days. I may have to go with a toga or some other large costume on the cruise if I don't lose enough to fit into the tiger costume again. I can do it if I lose (and keep off) one pound per week, so that will be a cinch.

I came up with a list of five songs I could do if I decided to participate in karaoke on the cruise:

(1) Dr. John - "Right Place, Wrong Time"
(2) The Eagles - "The Long Run" (I'd have to sing this an octave or two lower)
(3) R.E.M. - "Man on the Moon"
(4 & 5) Smash Mouth - "Then the Morning Comes" or "Walkin' on the Sun"

One other song/costume idea I had was to dress like John Belushi when he did his Joe Cocker impression and sing one of Cocker's songs.
jcollie719: (Default)
I saw another item I could use on my next vacation: a lotion/sunscreen applicator with a long handle (if I decide to keep using lotion instead of the spray-on sunscreen.)

Yesterday at KRCC, someone called me to compliment me on how nice and relaxed I sounded.
jcollie719: (Default)
I've been making a list of items I need to buy for my next cruise.  I don't even know when I'll be going again, yet I'm still planning it.  The list is at home, but here's what I can recall:

--Spare camcorder battery/batteries
--Corkscrew
--Computer speakers or iPod dock
--Spray-on sunscreen (a lesson learned from the mass roasting of my back in St. Thomas)

The spare battery will be used for longer events like the singles group's karaoke.  I had to switch between my camcorder and my digital camera to film all of the acts.  I'll do my best to actually be more involved in the group activities next time instead of just filming them from the sidelines.  If I take a beach trip again, I'll either bring a larger towel or pay to rent a beach chair/lounger.

I will work on greatly improving myself within the next two years.  After moving into my new condo, I will begin having 4-5 smaller meals per day instead of 3 larger ones.  I will walk for at least a half hour every day, even if it's just pacing back and forth indoors on cold days.  I already have an instructional video on nightclub dancing.  Now I just need an instructional video/book/class on flirting and reading body language.
