I think the triple-ring pattern on my phone is to warn me about phone numbers marked as suspicious. I just got a call from someone claiming to be from the "Publisher [not Publisher's] Clearing House." He actually said "con-grod-ulations" to me. I hung up without giving him any personal information.
jcollie719: (Hi JCollie)
Note to telemarketers: You're the main reason my dad's phone number is unlisted (and my listing is only my number without my address.) My dad and I both get calls once in a while from someone claiming to want to buy our homes.

I've noticed that sometimes my phone has a different ring pattern. Instead of one regular ring, my phone does a short ring/long ring/short ring pattern. I wonder if that's to indicate a robocaller.

I'm getting my COVID booster Thursday afternoon.

After a month or so without getting telemarketing robocalls on my cell phone, I've gotten five calls today (as of this writing.) Last year, I changed my voicemail settings. If the caller's number isn't in my contact list, my phone plays a message which begins with the "disconnected" tones before my actual message starts. That has eliminated about 80% of the spam calls I usually get.

Note to phone scam artists: If you're going to pose as a government agency like the IRS, at least make it sound like you're NOT in a noisy telemarketing room in the Middle East.

I've been feeling more tired this week for some reason.  I usually sleep in on Mondays (and sometimes Tuesdays.) I wound up also sleeping in on Wednesday and Thursday, then finally getting up at a normal time Friday.  I don't know if having less soda/caffeine this week contributed to that, or if my mind's entered vacation mode early.  I leave for Furry Fiesta next Thursday!  I initially thought about renting a car for the weekend, but there are lots of restaurants and stores within walking distance of the hotel.

Just over an hour after my first day of work began, I am unemployed again. I arrived at the company NFuse Direct at 9:30 to begin work as (according to them) a "customer service representative." I was handed a telemarketing script and list of numbers to call, then led into a conference room to begin training. I told the person in charge I couldn't do telemarketing (based on past unsuccessful attempts at it) and we mutually parted around 10:40.

For the benefit of companies that don't know the difference, "customer service" means the customer contacts the company, not the other way around. If the job involves outbound sales calls, that is not customer service and the job should not be labeled as such. I heard the receptionist at NFuse telling people the company does "customer service, marketing and sales." Those are three different things, yet the company really only does the last two.

I've been getting calls from companies like this for years. They hang up when you ask them to stop calling, ask for the company's name or supervisor, or do anything other than give them the personal information they're looking for. An article in the Los Angeles Times has identified the company (one of them, at least) allegedly responsible for these calls:

I called the number for "card member services" ... identified myself as a journalist and asked to speak with someone in charge. I was told that a supervisor would call me right back. No such call ever came.

But before the agent managed to hang up, she identified her company as both Ambrosia Web Design and AWD CAM Services, and said they were based in Arizona. That gave me something to go on.

According to the Arizona Corporation Commission, Ambrosia Web Design is operated by someone named Chris Ambrosia out of a house in Mesa.

A company called CAM Services Direct is also registered to Ambrosia and, according to state records, operates out of the same Mesa house.

Ambrosia, 45, didn't return calls for comment.

Since I'm assigned to the 12:30-8:00 PM shift next week, I'll stop by the Service Source office and ask for some 52" waist uniform pants. The later shift means I won't have to go to bed right after (or during) the Funday Pawpet Show. Unfortunately, I will miss my Overeaters Anonymous meeting and some of the Ustream shows I like including approximately the first two hours of Bucktown Tiger's show.

I thought Westword was going to do a print story on Rocky Mountain Fur Con, but apparently the online slideshow and Sorinkat interview are all they're doing. I didn't have to work today, so I made another trip to Denver to pick up a copy of Westword, but nothing in the issue on RMFC.

I keep getting calls from spoofed numbers that ring once then hang up. The numbers all begin with Florida area codes and end with 9999. Records at 800notes.com show the callers are trying to steal people's credit card information by claiming they could get a lower rate. I wish the FTC would actually go after these companies instead of just taking my name and saying "we'll get back to you."

Just a friendly note to telemarketers: Making insincere, self-deprecating remarks before you go into your sales pitch isn't cute and doesn't make people want to give. If anything, it annoys us more. It definitely doesn't appear to be genuine when it sounds like you're reading "ha ha ha ha" off of a script. If you're that bad at emoting while reading, maybe you should give up telemarketing and go into making porn films.

Hearing the telemarketers fake laugh reminded me of a comedy routine I saw a few years ago involving a novice door-to-door vacuum salesman. The salesman read from his sales script and laughed briefly at his jokes before emitting a deep sigh. My favorite exchange from that routine:

SALESMAN (reading sales script): What brand of vacuum do you own?
WOMAN: It's a Bissell.
SALESMAN (reading again): Bissell? Hey, I voted for him! HA-HA-Ha-ha-ha...ohhhhhh!

Tonight's C.S. Tweetup took place at the Colorado Mountain Brewery near I-25 and Interquest. Looking over their menu online, I originally planned to order one of their burgers with a Boca (vegetarian) patty. When I got there, the restaurant had provided free cheese quesadillas and kettle chips with salsa, guacamole, hot wing sauce, ranch dressing and bleu cheese dressing. I had limited myself to just 470 calories during the morning and early afternoon. At the meeting, I ate the equivalent of one quesadilla (8 sections) and 3-4 servings of chips plus a few spoons of the salsa, hot sauce and ranch dressing. Using calorie estimates from online sites (and erring on the high side, as usual,) my total intake for the day was about 1,930 calories, including a protein shake an hour ago.

P.S.: I found the answer to a question that [livejournal.com profile] bucktowntiger  had asked on Tuesday. He and others were talking about how water in a toilet swirls in one direction in the Northern Hemisphere and the opposite direction in the Southern Hemisphere. We all pondered which direction the water would swirl if the toilet were exactly on the Equator. Many answers were given (I jokingly thought the water would attempt to go in both directions, making a heart-shaped wave in the bowl.) According to an experiment mentioned at this site, the water heads straight down.

I got a call yesterday from a telemarketing firm that was trying to reach my dad. For some reason, certain databases list my parents' names under my phone number. (My parents' number is unlisted so they won't get calls like this.) Since the caller asked for "Lois" instead of "Louis," I knew this obviously wasn't a friend of his. I responded, "I'm sorry. That person isn't at this number." The caller apologized and hung up.

I thought that would be the end, but the company called my number three times while I was at work, not leaving a message. My Call Blocking list was full. I went ahead and cleared the list in order to put this company's number on it. I figure the other numbers on the old list have given up and moved on to other victims.

I attempted to contact the police in Washington DC (the company's location,) but their Web site didn't have any way to file an online complaint. I did file a complaint with the FTC and BBB, however.

Since my desktop computer is located in my bedroom, I sometimes find myself feeling drowsy after using it for a while. I guess my mind equates being in my bedroom with bedtime. I wish I had DirecTV installed in the bedroom as well as the living room. I usually watch TV while I'm on the laptop in the living room.

Early this morning, the weekday morning announcer at KRCC tried to call me while I was asleep to ask if I could fill in for him, but the phone ringing didn't wake me up like it usually does. That's another 3 hours of work I could have used.

The Phoenix police e-mailed me again. This time I was given a phone number to contact if I wanted to file a complaint against AIG Promotions for their constant phone calls. I haven't heard from AIG in about a week, but I'll keep the phone number handy in case the calls start again. When I get a call from a phone number I don't recognize or one marked "Unknown Caller" and they ask for me (without saying who they are first,) I've begun saying "John's not in right now. May I take a message?" They either say they'll call back or they just hang up.

PAY for Thursday, August 6th: 3 hours (6-9 AM)

I get calls at least twice a week from a telemarketing company located in Phoenix called AIG Promotions. They claim I requested information about accepting credit cards for a home-based business. Every time they call, I tell them I never requested such information and I asked them to stop calling. I filed a complaint with the FTC and the Better Business Bureau a few weeks ago, but neither of those helped. AIG responded to the BBB report yesterday saying I shouldn't have contacted them (which I didn't) if I didn't want them to call me. Lo and behold, they called again today! I finally e-mailed the police department in Phoenix tonight to ask if I could file charges of telephone harassment against the company. I hope someone can stop them.

I changed my cell phone number yesterday. I originally called AT&T to ask if they could trace the blocked number belonging to my "Craigslist caller." They said they couldn't, so they suggested changing the number. I don't use the cell phone much anyway since the signal at the condo isn't as strong.

UPDATE: The Phoenix police responded to my e-mail by simply giving me the link to the Do-Not-Call list complaint site, even though I told the police I've already done that.

Welcome to Telemarketing/Charity Collecting 101.

How to handle people who can't afford to give:

RIGHT:
CALLER: "Would you be able to donate at the $70 or $50 level?"
PERSON ON OTHER END: "I'm sorry. I lost my job recently so I can't afford to give anything right now."
CALLER: "Okay. Thank you for your time." (end call)

WRONG:
CALLER: "Would you be able to donate at the $70 or $50 level?"
PERSON ON OTHER END: "I'm sorry. I lost my job recently so I can't afford to give anything right now."
CALLER: "Well, (insert guilt trip about the number of children with cancer, police officers, etc. who died last year,) so would you be able to give a lesser amount like $30?" (If necessary, accuse person of not caring about sick kids or law enforcement. If person still refuses, wish death upon him/her then hang up.)

Both examples based upon actual calls I've received.

I can't wait until my laptop gets repaired. I tried to participate in [livejournal.com profile] bucktowntiger's uStream tonight, but the amount of memory the stream and the chat room used nearly brought my iMac to a halt. My iMac is one of the early CRT models from around 1994. Even typing a 5-letter response in the chat took about 30-40 seconds to process. I should have just bought an adapter to display the laptop screen on my bedroom TV.

My high school reunion is this Saturday. It starts with a lunchtime school tour (no specific time has been announced yet,) then the evening reception starts at 6:30 PM. The problem is my Saturday shift at KRCC runs from 2-8 PM, and nearly all of the substitutes I've contacted so far are either working at another job or helping out at the Blues Under The Bridge concert, which also happens Saturday. I couldn't reach one of the last two substitutes I tried to contact because her phone's voice mail is full. The other one works the 8-11 PM shift after me. I'm considering asking him to do the second half of my shift (5-8 PM) if he is unavailable for the whole shift.

I'm getting really pissed off with all the calls I've been receiving from telemarketers and nonprofits seeking donations. Some of the nonprofits are understanding when I say I can't afford to donate at this time. They thank me and end the call. Unfortunately, most of them keep trying to guilt-trip me and get me to donate a lower amount. I lost one of my jobs, most of my money goes to paying my bills and my credit cards are almost maxed out.

UPDATE: The second substitute offered to come in at 5 PM, so I will do 2-5 PM then go home and change before the reunion.

Back home after a dinner of Mexican leftovers at my parents' house. I drove my grandmother downtown to a doctor appointment earlier today, then we both went to Josh & John's for some ice cream and La Baguette Cafe to pick up some bread.

My body was starting to get used to waking at 7 a.m. for my telemarketing job. Even though I didn't get to sleep until about 1:30 a.m., I still kept waking up between 7 and 9 a.m. When I re-apply, I'll request an afternoon shift.

I've scheduled an appointment to be trained to work at a local telemarketing company. I've made my feelings about telemarketers known on previous posts and I don't relish the thought of becoming one myself, but I need to do something to earn a living. I was asked to arrive Wednesday morning at 7:45 a.m., and the hours are weekdays from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. It's been over a month since I was told about the pay scale. I believe it's $7.50 an hour to start, $9.50 an hour if I continually meet my sales goals, and $11 an hour for weeks with perfect attendance.

An answer from the NES version of Jeopardy! (courtesy Stupid Game Show Answers, "sgsa" on Twitter)

It was first produced in 1928, and manufacturers blew their wad making it.

In other news, I put three phone numbers on my "Call Blocking" list this morning. They were the Caller ID numbers of telemarketers and phishing scammers who frequently called me.

(BTW, the correct question above is "What is bubble gum?")

The microphone and mic stand I bought on eBay arrived a couple of hours ago. I bought them and a new webcam after my original webcam stopped working.

Months ago, I had applied for work at a telemarketing company. I hadn't scheduled a training appointment since I wanted to try and find a better job. Since that's unlikely to happen at the moment, I'll schedule an appointment Friday or next Monday.

  • 14:17 Used the 10% off coupon from Cost Plus World Market to buy some Cadbury Crunchie bars, HobNobs and Easter-themed pasta. #
  • 18:08 Activated Call Blocking after getting yet another call from someone posing as Verizon Wireless wanting to enter me into a sweepstakes. #
  • 23:38 Finished the other half of my dark chocolate/red chili bar. The chili gave it enough of a kick without being overpowering. #

That "Verizon Wireless" caller called me three times already.  Some guy with an accent claims he's with the company and says my number has been entered into a sweepstakes.  That's as far as he gets before I say "I'm not interested.  Please stop calling me."  I used *57 to report him the last two times.  The number displayed on my Caller ID (878-386-4908) turned out to be a "spoofed" number.  Between this guy, all the "car warranty" sellers, and the folks who simply call and hang up, I average at least three of these calls per day.  As I said last night, Call Blocking was activated for me, so that will cut down on these nuisance calls.
jcollie719: (Jackass Fish Slap)
After weeks of unsuccessfully trying to get telemarketers/scammers to stop calling me, I finally signed up for Call Blocking so the folks using fake Caller ID numbers won't be able to get through. I heard there was supposed to be a federal law passed back in 2007 against "spoofing" Caller ID numbers, but I don't know if it passed or not.

Man, I wish I could have this much energy during the day! I've got my iPod playing lots of upbeat music while I wait for Craig Ferguson's show to start. Right now I'm on "Doin' It To Death" by James Brown.
